Having never spent a Christmas in a tropical clime before now, I must admit to a certain level of bizarre fascination watching a bunch of Burmese and Thai people putting up little snowmen, angel, Father Christmas and other purely westernized and cold-climate objects all over the island. Even more oddly, I do feel a little more Christmassy and in a festive spirit upon seeing Frosty and pals.
After Friday’s very late finish to the day and a long dive day yesterday, I promised myself an easy night last night. But, alas, twas not to be. I think I mentioned that Carroll (my fellow DMT) has passed her DM and is leaving on Monday. It was decided that we’d all head down to Hippos for some fine food and relaxation. It was a very fine meal in all truth and I expect that the missus will like it too when we seek out our repasts over Christmas. But the alcohol started flowing. Not for me, I resisted mightily. Started with a banana milkshake, then a diet coke. I was strong, like bull, strong. Until a gin mennow (spelling could be well off there) appeared in front of me. Apparently my lack of imbibing was an affront to the group. I duly drank it to be grateful and then a Singha appeared in front of me.
I agreed to join the gang for a very very short time at Easy bar for a beer. I felt like I should at least buy one for myself for all of the generosity shown to me in the provision of alcohol at Hippo. We all raised a cheer to Carroll. It was then that the group decided one drink at the Babaloo party was simply required attendance.
There are “parties” all over the islands, all of the time. They actually kind of annoy the shit out of me. They are full of drugged up, drunk kids and aging stoners, lady-boys and fire-dancers all strung around a dance area, ordinarily steps from a bar. Loud dance music, sweaty people and lots of messed up. Sort of like a rave meets a dance club on a beach with petrol-inspired fire dancing. Not so much my scene. At least I manage to convince another o/w student to take their advanced. Must have had some measure of persuasion, I popped by the diveshop this morning and the student was there and ready to watch the deep dive video. Look at my salesmanship, Stone, we’re set!
Oy. Following my 4 a.m. finish on Friday and now my 1ish finish on Saturday, my sorry ass is dragging right now.
Now I sit here trying to focus on what I am writing, eat a mushroom omelette and shape up for the day. Two dives this afternoon and another night dive!! Tomorrow I have another two dives and I plan on attending physics 101 again to be able to sit my exam tomorrow evening/Tuesday morning.
I have about 40 minutes before I am needed back at the resort….time to work on my U of T application again!! And look, truly a short blog!!
Oh shit. Tomorrow is the Castle party. Not only an irritating party, but one at the foot of my apartment! I’ll let you know how my insomnia fares…….
